Indian Pharma Market May 2016 Update - Growth improves, but still in single digit

May 2016 saw little uptick in the pharma market growth compared to April. Growth rate more than doubled to 7.7% vis-a-vis 3.6% in April. But this is nothing compared to the growth rate in May 2015, which was 14%.

Key Insights for May 2016:

1.       7.7% growth in the previous month was lowest for this month in the previous 2 years.  Clearly impact of FDCs ban continues to impact the growth.

2.       With two consecutive months of single digit growth this year (April & May), the overall growth for the running quarter is down to just 6%. The market added  just Rs. 607 crore over May-15, as against Rs. 831 crore for the same month previous year.

3.       For the previous month, growth drivers were - negative 4.4% growth in Volumes, 5.0% growth due to price increase & 2.9% growth on account of new introductions.

4.       Impact of FDCs

a.        The FDCs related market again declined by 14.6%, whereas the Non-FDCs market grew at 8.4%.

b.       The FDC market showed huge volume de-growth of -21.4%

c.        Indian companies were impacted significantly due to this. While their FDC portfolio declined by 20.2%, that of MNCs declined by just 0.9% during the previous month

d.       Companies resorted to more new launches in the previous month to mitigate the impact of FDCs to the possible extent

 

Other Highlights of May 2016:

Overview

1.       Overall market clocked Rs. 8449 crore in the previous month

2.       Growth was 7.7% in the previous month

Corporate

1.       Amongst the top 10, Mankind grew at 18.7%, Abbott at 11.4% followed by Alkem at 10.6%

2.       Only 18 Corporates crossed the overall monthly market growth amongst the top 50.

3.       Amongst the top 50 Corporates, Bharat Serum had the highest growth of 42.8%, followed by Wallace*at 29.5% & Eris at 24.4%

4.       Only 18 Corporates had double digit growth in the previous month

5.       Amongst the 11-20 ranked Corporates, Intas had the highest growth of 15.2%, followed by Microat 14.2% & Alembic at 11.3%

6.       Amongst the 21-30 ranked Corporates, Eris had the highest growth at 24.4%, followed by Novartis at 9.5% & Wockhardt at 9.4%

7.       Amongst the 31-40 ranked Corporates, Bharat Serums grew at 42.8% followed by Wallace at 29.5% and Akumentis at 19.5%

8.       Amongst the 41-50 ranked Corporates, Systopic had the highest growth at 20.5% followed by Janssen at 18.0% & Win-Medicare at 17.3%

9.       Amongst the 51-60 ranked Corporates, Boehringer grew at 52.5%, followed by Fresenius Kabi at 48.1% & Corona at 28.0%

10.    Amongst the 61-70 ranked Corporates, Shreya grew at 21.6%, followed by RPG at 11.8%  and Tablets India at 9.3%

11.    Amongst the 71-80 ranked Corporates, Dabur grew at 60.8%, followed by Samarth at 32.4% & Danone at 17.7%

12.    Amongst the 81 -90 ranked Corporates, Paras grew at 44.2%, followed by Veritaz at 38.5% and Galderma at 30.2%

13.    Amongst the 91- 100 ranked Corporates, Ind-Swift grew at 63.1%, followed by Ordain at 32.4% and Curatio at 31.8%    

14.    Mercury revenue crossed Rs. 50 crore on MAT Basis                   

15.    Ordain was 100th ranked Corporate, while UTH was ranked 150th.

Companies

1.       Abbott HC grew at 12.5% whereas Abbott India grew at 13.1% during the previous month

2.       Zuventus growth was 13.6%

Indian V/s MNC

1.       Indian companies growth was 7.9% versus 7.0% for MNCs

2.        Amongst the top 50 in MNCs, Janssen grew at 18.0%, followed by Abbott at 11.4% and Novartis at 9.5%

3.       Under the Non-NLEM category, Indian companies grew at 9.0% whereas MNCs grew at 7.1%

NLEM, Non NLEM & Non-Scheduled Para 19 market

1.       The NLEM 2013 containing molecules market grew at just 2.6%, whereas the non DPCO market grew by 8.6%,  resulting in an overall growth of 7.7%

2.       NLEM & Non-NLEM segments had unit growth of 0.8% and -3.1% respectively.

Therapy

1.       14 therapies grew faster than the overall market growth

2.       Slow growth therapies were - Respiratory at 0.6%, Gastrointestinal at 5.9% , Pain & Analgesics at 5.1%, and Anti-infectives at 2.7%

3.       Chronic again did well - Anti-diabetic grew by 14.9%, Cardiac by 10.2% and Neuro / CNS at 10.3%

4.       Anti-Malarials declined by 13.2%

5.       VMS segment also did well with 9.8% growth

6.       Derma & Urology also had decent growth with 8.6% & 11.3% growth respectively

Regional Dynamics

1.       15 regions did better than the overall market

2.       Odisha had the highest growth at 14.2%, followed by Mumbai City at 13.8% & Karnataka at 13.5%

Molecules

1.       Amoxycillin + Clavulanic Acid  grew at 2.8%, while Glimepiride + Metformin grew at 20.2%

2.       Growth of other key molecules was - Paracetamol at 14.0%, Atorvastatin -1.0%, Probiotic Microbes at 17.1%, Bacillus Clausii at  27.2%, Cefixime at 5.7%, Pantoprazole at 10.7%, Montelukast + Levocetrizine at 0.3%, Glimepiride + Metformin + Pioglitazone at -10.4%, Vitamin-D at 18.9%, Hydroquinone + Mometasone + Tretinoin at 7.8%, Voglibose + Metformin + Glimepiride at 43.9%, Rosuvastatin at 17.2%, Protein Supplements at 13.5%, Azithromycin at -9.1%, Calcium Carbonate + Vit D3 market at 2.7%, Paracetamol + Phenylephrine + Chlorpheniramine at -2.8%, Meropenem at 34.1%, Montelukast + Fexofenadine at 8.1% Diclofenac at 16.6%, Telmisartan at 0.8%, Levetiracetam at 19.6%

3.       Sildenafil was 50th ranked molecule, while Paracetamol + Tramadol was ranked 100th

6.       Within Anti-diabetic,  Lyxumia (Sanofi), Tenepride M (Micro) & Megagliptin (Aristo) were launched

7.       Within Derma Panderm NM (Macleods), Lipbless (Zydus) & Zocon KZ (FDC) were launched

8.       New brands in Gynaec were Ferisome (Micro), Femozer Plus & Femozer (Leeford)
