Kolkata based AMRI Hospitals, owned by FMCG major Emami Group, has made significant recovery from the disastrous fire it suffered in Dec’11 at its flagship unit, that killed 92 people. From a revenue of Rs 2.12B in FY11, business came down to Rs 1.25B in FY13, a drop of 40%. From that low of FY13, the company has recovered. AMRI surpassed the FY11 revenue figure for the first time in FY16, posting revenue of Rs 2.82B, an all-time high number.

On the profitability front, the business remains challenged. While the hospital was profitable in FY11, and a few years preceding it, it has posted losses for five straight years after the fire, including in FY16, despite record revenue.

AMRI (an acronym for Advanced Medical Research Institute) claims 1000 beds and over 500 doctors, over 3 locations. Its super specialty tertiary care units are located at Dhakuria, Salt Lake, Mukundapur and Bhubaneswar along with a day care facility - AMRI Medical Centre at Southern Avenue, Kolkata. The Dhakuria unit, where the fire broke out, was shut for more than two years.
